Storyline Matewan

MATEWAN is an American classic. When I first saw MATEWAN (written and directed by John Sayles) on cable tv (1987 or 88) I was mesmerized instantly by the "the look" of the movie (cinematography by Haskell Wexler).
Matewan sits at the heart of West Virginia's Magnolia district. The magnolia district, along with the Harding and Lee districts, came together to form Mingo County in 1895. The naming of the small Magnolia town is a story in itself. They say it started with a bear hunter and his favorite dog, Mate.

This is the story of a 1920 coal-mine strike. Caught this on late night cable. Fantastic film on all levels. It looks great and has some amazing performances.
The Battle of Matewan (Matewan Massacre) On May 19, 1920, Albert C. Felts and 12 of his men were murdered by a group of armed men led by Sheriff Sid Hatfield. This started when Mr. Felts attempted to evict families from property owned by the Stone Mountain Coal Corporation.
Matewan, founded in 1895, was a small independent town with only a few elected officials. The mayor at the time was Cabell Testerman, and the chief of police was Sid Hatfield. Both refused to succumb to the company's plans, and sided with the miners.
