Badis species are micropredators feeding on small aquatic crustaceans, worms, insect larvae and other zooplankton. In the aquarium they often refuse dried foods, and should instead be offered small live or frozen fare such as Artemia, Daphnia or glassworm.
Badis is a genus of fish in the family Badidae found in South Asia, Southeast Asia and China. These species have a sharp spine on the opercle, soft and spinous parts of the dorsal fin contiguous, three spines in the anal fin, tubed pores in the lateral line, villiform teeth and a rounded caudal fin.
Badis badis (F. Hamilton, 1822) Badis badis also known as the blue perch or blue badis is a species of fish in the family Badidae of the order Anabantiformes. It is a small, predatory fish that feeds on tiny invertebrates.
The Scarlet Badis (Dario dario) is a colorful, peaceful, fish from the Badidae family. It is also known as the Scarlet Gem Badis, and is one of the most underrated species of freshwater fish. It was previously known as Badis bengalensis or Badis bengalensis.
The badis, the South American leaf fish (Monocirrhus polyacanthus), and the Asian leaf fish (Nandus nandus) are examples. It is believed that Nandidae represents a group of ancient fishes that once spanned the entire globe, but today’s few species are found only in Asia, Africa, and South America.
Badis badis spawns in caves, much the same as cichlids. They will not eat the fry, though care should be taken to use only a cycled and establised tank for breeding purposes, so the tiny fry can find food the first few days. Badis badis species grow to 7-8 cm or so, whereas Badis bengalensis grows to about 3 cm. If you can find this fish, get it!
Overview The Badis, also known as the Dwarf Chameleon Fish, originates from India, and is one fish in which color changes are considerable. Predominantly brown with patterned black or red bars, males will change to a bluish-black pattern with iridescent blue showing in the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins during breeding times.
Scarlet badis inhabits in the basing of Brahmaputra river within Assam state area and in South of West Bengal state. The fish can be encountered in small rivers up to 1 m deep with crystal clear water and sandy or gravel bottom. It usually stays close to shores and swims among thick-set water plants.
